Today I had my first three cavities filled. Ever. I always thought my teeth were pretty healthy. I brush well, use dental floss, and use mouthwash to kill germs. I never had a cavity before... why should I worry now?
I visited the dentist for the first time in 4 years a couple weeks ago. The hygienist didn't mention any problems. She actually praised me for my good brushing habits. But the doctor immediately said, "It looks like there are four weak spots that are just big enough to be called cavities." I was shocked. He explained how small they are and why my toothbrush bristles were actually too large to even prevent them. In summary: they were no fault of my own.
So, we scheduled two appointments to fill them. Today was my first.
The room I was in was awesome. The doctor is a Columbus Blue Jackets fan (as am I) and had lots of expensive memorabilia covering the walls. The ones I stared at the whole time were a signed jersey from a couple years back and a goal tender's stick that was also signed by the entire team. He also had autographed photos of Rusty Klesla and Rick Nash among other items. Awesome.
The doctor numbed me up quickly with two shots. I was terrified beforehand that it would hurt like it used to when I was a kid. I had a lot of teeth pulled by my old dentist because they were not coming in correctly. The Novocaine shots hurt sooo bad back then. Luckily, this time they did not. The second one stung for only a millisecond. I was elated!
Twenty minutes later, the Novocaine kicked into high gear and my teeth were ready to be drilled. I didn't notice a thing while he was doing it except for the horrid stench of burning enamel prior to the hygienist putting the suction tube into my mouth.
Ten minutes after that, he applied the resin and I was on my way. I did my best to document the process using my iPhone. Afterwards, I recorded a short audio-journal on the event.
My fourth cavity will be filled ten days from now. Hopefully the experience will go just as well then! Enjoy!
